Socialist Campaign for a Labour Victory

Ian Lavery MP, who Labour Party members and trade unionists from all over the country were calling to stand for Labour leader, has said he will not be standing, and backed Andy Burnham.

See the report on the ITV news website.

Burnham is not a left winger. He is the most leftish of the broadly Blairite/Brownite candidates, probably roughly in the same political area as Ed Miliband. He seems to be getting support from the leadership of Unite.

Ian Lavery’s decision is a shame. It makes it even harder to get a left candidate in the election. But the case for that, at least to shape and influence the debate in the labour movement, remains strong. We should work for it to happen.
